Recently, I have been reading posts that my classmates have been writing. When one caught me eye. (Note: I am no calling this person out, or what they believe in. I just read it and it made me think, and I wanted to respond to it to get my opinion out. If you want to read the original blog here’s the link: http://thoughtsof-mine.tumblr.com/)
The topic that she talked about was fangirling. A phenomenal aspect that is in fact taking over this county. These girls (sometimes guys), has made these fictional characters and movies, and made them real. They obsessed and cannot get enough of the latest trends. They strive know every single detail and fact about whatever is hot. And the worse part, they make the actors who play these roles into the character that they dream about in books and stories. What I got from her entire post was that fangirling was annoying and stupid. Which in a way it is, but there is also a huge benefit from these hardcore fans. They bring in a lot of profit!
Think about it, all of these obsessed fans HAVE to go see the movie. They HAVE to buy the merch (merchant). The Huger Games alone made $152,535,747 it’s opening weekend at the movie theater. Not to mention such movies as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II making an incredible amount of $169,189,427 it’s opening weekend. (Statics of these movies and many other can be found at http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/). They made this much money because of these so-called annoying “fangirl”. Without them, these movies would not of made that much money. There is always competition in address these fan girls. With teaser trailers or sneak peaks, it gets the word out about their movies. It also gets these fan girls going; excited to waste their money without regrets.
It might seem weird to be talking down to these people because they like something that you do not like. But everyone at one point in their lives had passed a stage of being one of these obsessed fan. I, myself am guitly of doing this. As a matter of fact, I still like to watch Twilight, and re-read the books. I try not to let these fan girls ruin what I enjoy. But you have to be careful, the lines between being an enthusiast and being a fan girl is very thin.
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary an enthusiast can be defined as “one who tends to become ardently absorbed in an interest” That to me is a lot different from a fan girl. I personally believe that being an enthusiast is normal. You like something a lot, you read all the books and you watch the movie. Just like any normal person. But you have to be careful of where you land with the entire “crazy fan girl”.
What I’m trying to say it, even though some type of fangirling is annoying. But we actually need them to help make money and make a famous person famous. You can be an enthusiast about a certain book or movie. Just try not to over do it.
Lately, for me. It seems like our phones have been taking up our lives. It dictates our lives and we are forever glued to it. The lack of communication is really starting to bug me.
It is socially acceptable to go out to dinner with your friends or family and put your phone on the table waiting for a text from someone. Or to just have your phone in your hand when you are hanging out with your friends so when you get a text message, you can reply instantly. Sometimes, I wonder what harm a cell phone is doing to us socially and mentally.
For example: I recently got my driver’s license and started to drive my friend around (willing of course). But that means one thing… I should not be texting when I am driving. But my friends on the other hand can. So as soon as they step into the car, the automatically are on their phone. During the remainder of the car ride, they are busying on Facebook or texting someone else. While they are doing that however, they don’t really communicate. Which means, there is no talking going on. This really annoys the crap out of it. I might sound like a hypocrite for saying so, but sometimes I feel like people my age live off their phones. And if I am giving them a ride, and being nice about it (because I really don’t have to) then when you sit in the car with me. Actually talk to me. You can ride the bus and text, because there is no one to talk too. According to PewResearchCenter, one in three teens send more than a 100 text message a day. (More statistics can be found on their website http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1572/teens-cell-phones-text-messages ) All of that time, we stain our eyes on this tiny screen to communicate through texting than then talking in person. I don’t mean to say don’t text when you are with your friends. But don’t completely devote your life to it. It is okay to put down your phone for an hour or so and enjoy life. We only live once.. so why waste that time talking to someone when you can enjoy the person that is currently in your life. And plus, if that person was important enough, they would take time to see you in person.
One time, I went to Godfather’s Pizza down the street from my high school with some friends; there was like seven or eight of us. For a good ten minutes, we sat there… each and every single one of us on our phones. And there was absolutely no talking going on. It was kind of sad to realize this is what people do nowadays. I looked around and everyone had a slice of pizza in their hands and a phone in the other. It wasn’t like we had some big important issue that we actually needed our phones. We were just simply on Facebook reading other people’s status instead of talking. And when someone actually tried to make conversation. It took a while for anyone of us keep it going. Because, again, we were too engrossed in our phones.
It might seem weird to not have my phone on me. But lately, I try to make an effort of not texting so much, and actually having human communication. It might seem hard at times, because texting is so much faster and get everything out fast. But sometimes, it feels nice to put my phone down and enjoy the time I have with the people around me. Don’t get me wrong. I do sit on my phone a lot too, but I think the hard part here is having finding a good balance between the two. Having a life, and being glued to your phone.
Hey! So I told myself I would never have a Tumblr because it was to many “hipsters” using it. But LOOK here I am with my freshly made Tumblr.. For that I thank you Mr.Walker! But you know what? I felt like being a cool person so I made a Tumblr. So I can officially say I am a cool kid for having a Tumblr.
At first, I thought the point of having a blog is somewhat stupid and there would be no point to it, but then I really thought about it. It is kind of cool to have a very unstructured type of writing assignment like this. It gives us the creative rights in what we want to read about and what we want to write about. Best of all, if we pick a topic that we really want to vent about, we can easily reach our word limit in no time. I am actually really excited to start my first post. I already have a bunch of ideas running through my head. I just have to wait until I have time to sit down and spill my guts.
So class time is almost up, and its Friday. Mentally, I’m not here anymore. So I’m just going to end this post and count down the minutes until school is over so I can go home and relax!
